Opensignal’s April 2024 Mobile Network Experience Report names Rakuten Mobile a leader among Japan’s mobile operators in five network performance categories

Tokyo, April 25, 2024 - Rakuten Mobile, Japan’s newest and most modern mobile network, is recognized by Opensignal, global provider of network experience and market performance insights, as the country’s leading mobile network service provider across five network performance areas.

Opensignal’s April 2024 Mobile Network Experience Report*1 shows Rakuten Mobile as Japan’s leader in the Games Experience, 5G Upload Speed, 5G Download Speed, Upload Speed Experience and Voice App Experience categories.

The recognition from Opensignal adds to an array of industry accolades for Rakuten Mobile's world-first cloud-native, virtualized wireless network based on Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) standards, launched in 2020.

Japan’s fastest 5G upload and download speeds
Opensignal identifies Rakuten Mobile as Japan’s fastest 5G mobile network. It is maintaining its lead in 5G Upload Speed at 29.5 Mbps and is now sole winner of 5G Download Speed at 214.5 Mbps, 28.7% faster than the second placed operator. Rakuten Mobile also maintains its lead as Japan’s best Upload Speed Experience provider.

Japan’s best network experience for gamers, OTT voice services and video streamers
Rakuten Mobile is recognized as sole winner in the Games Experience category, providing gamers with the best real-time multiplayer mobile gaming experience.

Rakuten Mobile also takes Opensignal’s sole top spot for Voice App Experience, providing best quality of experience for over-the-top (OTT) voices services on mobile voice apps.

Rakuten Mobile takes joint winner spot in Live Video Experience and Video Experience categories. Live Video Experience measures the quality of real-time video streaming at 1080p video quality at current events, while Video Experience represents the quality of experience of on-demand video streams.

This means that Japan’s fastest 5G mobile network is also a top mobile network for streaming and viewing live gaming or influencer streams, sports, music concerts and other events happening in real time, as well as watching on-demand content from video content providers.

Rakuten Mobile will continue to advance Open RAN technologies while improving network quality to provide mobile customers in Japan with best-in-class mobile services.
