Rakuten Mobile Appointed as Designated Public Corporation Under Disaster Countermeasures Basic Act

Tokyo, February 1, 2022 - Rakuten Mobile, Inc. announced that as of February 1, 2022, it has been recognized as a Designated Public Corporation as defined by Article 2 Item 5 of the Disaster Countermeasures Basic Act.  

A Designated Public Corporation is a public corporation or organization running a public utility that has been appointed by the Prime Minister of Japan based on the Disaster Countermeasures Basic Act. Organizations appointed as Designated Public Corporations are expected to play an important role in disaster prevention, response and recovery, including the preparation of Operational Disaster Prevention Plans.

To date, Rakuten Mobile has carried out various disaster response initiatives on a company-wide scale, such as establishing a division for disaster response and conducting disaster drills. Initiatives also include clarifying the response process and chain of command, assignment of disaster personnel, securing materials, equipment and fuel resources, as well as designating personnel to collaborate with related organizations. The company has also put in place a system to loan mobile devices in areas hit by disasters to ensure people have access to communications.

By being appointed a Designated Public Corporation, Rakuten Mobile will be able to quickly receive access passes for its mobile base station vehicles, power supply vehicles and other vehicles to access the disaster hit areas to establish mobile base stations in place of base stations that are not functioning due to disaster and quickly start work to resume mobile service operations.
